Temporary Protected Status and Deferred Enforced Departure are two distinct but related forms of humanitarian protection. TPS is granted by the Secretary of Homeland Security to nationals of countries experiencing armed conflict, environmental disaster, or other extraordinary conditions that make safe return impossible. DED is a presidential authority that similarly allows individuals from designated countries to remain in the United States for a temporary period. Both protections are discretionary, time-limited, and do not provide a direct path to permanent residence — yet they offer a lifeline to hundreds of thousands of people who would otherwise face deportation to dangerous situations.
